 Snap&Read

What is Snap&Read?

A tool that helps students check their writing by reading it aloud. This tool is great for the editing part of writing because listening can help students notice mistakes they might not see when they read silently. Snap&Read is helpful for students with dyslexia, ADHD, or anyone who does better with listening than reading.

Pros and Cons of Snap&Read:

Pros:

  1. Listening for Mistakes: Students can hear their writing read out loud, which helps them find errors.
  2. Multiple Languages: It can read text in different languages, making it helpful for students learning English.
  3. Adjustable Speed: The reading speed can be slowed down, making it easier for students to follow along.
  4. Focus Tool: Includes a tool to dim parts of the screen, helping students concentrate on the words being read.

Cons:

  1. Cost: Requires a subscription, which might be too expensive for some families or schools.
  2. Internet Needed: Snap&Read needs the internet for full features, which limits use in some classrooms.
  3. Pronunciation Issues: Sometimes, the tool doesn’t pronounce words perfectly, which can confuse students.

Example Assignment:

Assignment: "Write and Edit a Personal Story"

  1. Introduction: Explain what a personal story is and why editing is important.
  2. Using Snap&Read:
    • After students finish their first draft, they use Snap&Read to listen to it.
    • While listening, they can note anything that sounds awkward or needs fixing.
    • Then, they make changes based on what they heard to improve their story before turning it in.

My Experience with Snap&Read:

When I tried Snap&Read at the school that I work for, I noticed how useful it is to hear mistakes I might miss when reading. The option to slow down the reading helped, and the screen-dimming tool made it easier to focus. However, the tool did sometimes say words in a way that didn’t sound right, which students would need to double-check.

Recommendation: I would recommend Snap&Read for students during the editing stage because hearing their writing helps them find mistakes. It’s a great way for students to make their stories sound clearer.
