This guide gives you five great tools to help your child practice math at home. Each tool matches what your child is learning in school, like working with numbers, solving word problems, and practicing addition and subtraction. These resources make math fun and easy to understand!


1.XtraMath – Practice Math Facts

Standard: MA.2.NSO.2.2 – Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.

What It Does: XtraMath is a simple program that helps kids get faster at basic math facts. They practice addition, subtraction, and more to help them remember answers quickly and build confidence in math.

How to Use It: Visit www.xtramath.org and create a free account. XtraMath works on any computer or tablet with internet access.

2. Prodigy Math – Solving Word Problems

Standard: MA.2.AR.3.2 – Solve real-world and mathematical problems involving addition and subtraction within 100.

What It Does: Prodigy Math uses adventure games to teach math. Kids solve word problems as they go on quests and defeat characters. It makes math feel like an exciting adventure!

How to Use It: Go to www.prodigygame.com to create a free account. Available online or as a mobile app 


3. Khan Academy – Addition and Subtraction Practice

Standard: MA.2.NSO.2.4 – Add and subtract within 100 fluently using strategies and algorithms.

What It Does: Khan Academy has video lessons, exercises, and quizzes to help students practice adding and subtracting. Kids can go at their own speed and watch lessons to help understand each step.

How to Use It: Visit www.khanacademy.org and sign up for a free student account. Search for “2nd-grade math” to find the right lessons.


4. IXL – Learning About Shapes

Standard: MA.2.GR.1.1 – Identify and compare shapes based on their attributes.

What It Does: IXL is an interactive website that helps kids practice identifying and comparing shapes. The website gives feedback, so kids know right away if their answers are correct.

How to Use It: Go to www.ixl.com and sign up for an account. Some areas are free, but full access requires a subscription.




5. DreamBox – All-Around Math Practice

Standard: MA.2.AR.2.1 – Solve one- and two-step addition and subtraction real-world problems.

What It Does: DreamBox adapts to your child’s learning level, with games and lessons that cover lots of math areas. Kids learn at their own pace, so it’s a great way to build confidence in math.

How to Use It: Visit www.dreambox.com to sign up for a parent or school account. Available online or as an app on tablets.
